What is Cool Science?

Cool Science is a Colorado Springs nonprofit dedicated to getting kids, parents and teachers excited about science.   Cool Science, partnering with local corporations and universities, currently engages in chemistry, physics and earth science outreach to El Paso County 3rd – 8th graders in their classrooms, home schools, scout troops, and after school clubs.

We bring only the really Cool Science – solutions that change colors, liquids that turn into solids, solids that turn into liquids, glowing things, slimy things, bubbling dry ice, explosions (safe ones!), and electricity demonstrations that will make your hair stand on end!   We are committed to showing students the fun side of science!

Further, Cool Science conducts exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities, workshops and camps that are open to the public at various public venues - such as Colorado College, USAFA and UCCS.

What did Cool Science do in the 2006-2007 school year?

Outreach Programs:

bullet

Demonstrations in Schools – Cool Science conducted 292 presentations in 7 different school districts for 6772 students.  This is by far the MOST presentations we've ever done in one year, and the most students we've ever served!  This is thanks to our awesome and motivated Cool Science Programs Director Ben!  And, of course, to the sponsors who made it possible to hire Ben!  THANK YOU!!

Science Days in Schools - Cool Science conducted our "Science Day" program for 4 schools: Explorer Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Talbott Elementary and Remington Elementary.

Girl Scout Science Camp  – 50 girls attended the week long Cool Science Day Camp at Colorado College in June 2007 exploring lots of exciting topics - including making cornstarch dance with sound waves and walking on top of a liquid...  COOOOOOOL.  They also built cardboard boats during the week and raced them in the CC Pool! What fun!

Girl Scout Badge Workshops – Cool Science conducted 4 workshops during the 2006/2007 school year for approximately 150 girls.  These chemistry & engineering workshops were in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of America Wagon Wheel Council of Colorado Springs.
bullet

Two Brownie & Daisy workshops involved making a pinhole camera, taking a picture, and developing it in a dark room; testing acids and bases; making slime polymer and dissecting a diaper; fun with dry ice, analyzing for chemical unknowns, building & testing aluminum foil boats, and designing and building gumdrop towers.

bullet

Two Juniors workshops involved fun with atoms and light, building batteries, designing & building hoop gliders, and designing & building water filters and gumdrop towers.

bullet

Cool Science at UCCS – this year the fall workshop was filled with hands on AND big demo shows!  These workshops required intense volunteer involvement which we got from enthusiastic and outgoing UCCS and CC students- the feedback from the parents and kids was the best we've ever gotten!

Colorado College presents: Cool Science! – for the second time, CC Cool Science students took over their spring event completely, from the planning to the execution phase!  They pulled it off with GREAT new demos and new workshops, and Cool Science's hands-on exhibits!
