Join Cool Science for Science on Tap every 2nd Monday of the month [except this month- see below] at Jack Quinn’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in downtown Colorado Springs. Presenters begin at 6:30 pm and typically speak for 60-90 minutes including Q&A, with food and drink available beginning at 6:00 pm. A wide variety of fascinating topics are presented by local scientists for informal discussion, and the relaxed atmosphere encourages anyone and everyone to come explore the latest ideas in science and technology. From practical to theoretical, the presentations and group interactions provide a fun and interesting way to gain an understanding of the world around us.

Principles in Green Chemistry
Niki Juhl and Tisha Mendiola Jessop, UCCS Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Summary: For the past 5 years, we have improved first-year, fundamental chemistry lab courses at UCCS by integrating green and sustainable chemistry principles. The work is based on the efforts of John Warner and Paul Anastas pivotal publication of the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, which itself was based on global efforts to bolster environmentalism and sustainable development. They also incorporate the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which sprung as action items from the 2015 Declaration of Human Rights.
Join Niki and Tisha as they discuss the global motivations to develop the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, the UN Sustainable development goals, and how we have asked students to engage with the material in lab courses as applications of chemistry principles learned in lecture courses.

Niki Juhl is currently a Teaching Professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at UCCS. Niki serves as the Intro to Chemistry Lab Curriculum Coordinator, developing curricula to reflect the best teaching, learning, and chemistry practices and integrating those concepts into an Open Educational Lab Resource. She works closely with other Lab Curriculum Coordinators and faculty to integrate Green and Sustainable Chemistry, Social Justice in Science and provides opportunities for students to apply these topics to chemistry in our environment, economy, and society.
Tisha Mendiola Jessop is currently a Teaching Professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at UCCS. She serves as the Lab Curriculum Coordinator for General Chemistry Lab courses designing and updating labs to best reflect best practices in teaching, learning, and Chemistry education. She has worked closely with other Lab Curriculum Coordinators and faculty in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department to integrate Green and Sustainable Chemistry, Social Justice in Science, and advance opportunities for students to critically think about the applications of concepts and role Chemistry study plays in “real-world” situations.
