Science on Tap

Picture

Join Cool Science for Science on Tap every 2nd Monday of the month [except this month- see below] at Jack Quinn’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in downtown Colorado Springs.  Presenters begin at 6:30 pm and typically speak for 60-90 minutes including Q&A, with food and drink available beginning at 6:00 pm.  A wide variety of fascinating topics are presented by local scientists for informal discussion, and the relaxed atmosphere encourages anyone and everyone to come explore the latest ideas in science and technology.  From practical to theoretical, the presentations and group interactions provide a fun and interesting way to gain an understanding of the world around us.

Towards Taming Cyber Risks
Shouhuai Xu, PhD, UCCS Dept. of Computer Science
Summary:  Cyberspace is a man-made “universe” that is indispensable to our daily lives. While ushering in previously unthinkable convenience and services, cyberspace, like other advanced technologies, is a doubled-edged sword. In this talk, I will discuss cyber risks imposed by cyber attackers on the public and society, ranging from smart homes to space infrastructures / systems (e.g., satellites) and from individuals to nation-state. Then, I will discuss approaches to mitigating cyber risks (including what can be contributed by each citizen) and our own research towards taming cyber risks from a holistic perspective.
Dr. Shouhuai Xu is the Gallogly Chair Professor in Cybersecurity, Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS). His research has won several awards, including First Place at the 2019 worldwide adversarial malware classification challenge organized by the MIT Lincoln Lab, the USCYBERCOM CyberRecon’2023 Analyst Award, the USCERCOM CyberRecon’2024 Hunter Award, and First Place at 2024 DoD NSIN/UC2 Cyber Innovators Challenge. His research has been funded by AFOSR, AFRL, ARL, ARO, DOE, NSA, NSF and ONR. He co-initiated the International Conference on Science of Cyber Security (SciSec) and is serving as its Steering Committee Chair.  More information about his research can be found at https://xu-lab.org.
