Science on Tap

Picture

Join Cool Science for Science on Tap every 2nd Monday of the month [except this month- see below] at Jack Quinn’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in downtown Colorado Springs.  Presenters begin at 6:30 pm and typically speak for 60-90 minutes including Q&A, with food and drink available beginning at 6:00 pm.  A wide variety of fascinating topics are presented by local scientists for informal discussion, and the relaxed atmosphere encourages anyone and everyone to come explore the latest ideas in science and technology.  From practical to theoretical, the presentations and group interactions provide a fun and interesting way to gain an understanding of the world around us.

Next up: Monday, February 10, 2025 at 6:30 pm

Cardiovascular Health
Dawn Lovejoy, RN, UCHealth Memorial Hospital
Summary:  February is Heart Health month, so this presentation will:
  • Identify three lifestyle changes people can make to lessen their risk of having heart disease
  • Identify three uncommon signs and symptoms of myocardial infarction
  • Discuss three interventions non-medical people can do to help save a life
  • Recall the three important aspects of CPR performance that can increase blood flow

We'll also discuss the pathophysiology associated with myocardial infarctions, why AEDs work, and the role of perfusing the brain for optimal outcomes.
Dawn has been a nurse for 32 years, almost 25 of which have been within the cardiovascular and critical care departments at UCHealth Memorial Hospital where she is Cardiovascular Clinical Coordinator for Outreach.  She has advanced experience caring for patients in procedural and in-patient areas, served as a nursing leader, and recently obtained a master’s degree in nursing education.  She celebrates heart month each year by giving back to the community, with the main goal to encourage people to learn to save lives simply with the education provided.  In Colorado, our Good Samaritan Law allows citizens to provide conducive, life-changing, immediate assistance to others without fear of litigation.
