Exploring DKIST: The Incredible Engineering of the World's Largest Solar Telescope
Dr. Arthur Eigenbrot, National Solar Observatory in Boulder
Summary: The National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) is the largest solar telescope ever built. Located on the summit of Haleakalā on Maui and operational since 2019, DKIST represents a quantum leap in ground-based solar telescopes with its 4m primary mirror and suite of advanced instruments. The science that DKIST enables is groundbreaking, but no less so is the engineering required to design, build, and operate this one-of-a-kind facility. In this talk we will focus primarily on the "behind the scenes" of DKIST to understand the incredible challenges faced (like how to not melt all of your instruments!), and ingenious solutions devised, by the team at the world's most advanced solar telescope.
Dr. Arthur Eigenbrot (he/him) is an Instrumentation Calibration Engineer at the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST), which is operated by the National Solar Observatory Boulder, CO. His primary job is designing and building the reduction pipelines that turn raw data from the DKIST instruments into science-quality data products for use by astronomers around the world. He received his PhD in Astronomy from the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he focused on studies of galaxies outside of the Milky Way. In 2017 he moved to Colorado and gave up late nights at a telescope when he joined the daywalkers at the National Solar Observatory.
