** Carnival Day may be over, but you can still watch recordings of all of these presentations on our Cool Science Festival YouTube channel. ** For many of our most devoted young fans Cool Science Carnival Day for Kids IS the festival! Carnival Day at UCCS (even though it wasn't called that yet) actually began in 2009, and was such a huge hit that it was a no-brainer when we decided to expand it the following year to create the multi-day celebration of all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) that we all enjoy now. This year due to COVID-19 concerns our Carnival Day will be going completely virtual (online). Highlighting the 2020 virtual lineup is a live presentation by Ian Miller and Tyler Lyson from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science- "After the Asteroid: Earth's Comeback Story", about their ground breaking discoveries at Corral Bluffs, just east of Colorado Springs, one of the most significant advances in paleontology in decades. Their work was also featured in the recent PBS NOVA special "Rise of the Mammals", and on Carnival Day they will talk to kids and answer questions live. |
If You're Going - online that is!
What: Cool Science Carnival Day for Kids When: Sat. Oct. 10, 2020 9 am - 4:30 pm Where: Online Who: Primarily for kids K-8th (fun for all!) Why: Because STEAM Rocks! How: With your help, please donate Cool Science Carnival Day is just the first of 9 days and over 50 great Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival special events for all ages. This year we have a mix of virtual (online) events as well as many of the in-person events you've always enjoyed - now just socially distanced of course!
Check the full calendar of events -there's truly something for everyone! We still need lots of help to pull this off if you would like to volunteer. <- Tyler Lyson and Ian Miller from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science examine early mammal fossils at Corral Bluffs. The virtual Carnival Day is divided into two parallel live-stream video channels designed specifically for K-8th grade students - a "Show Channel" and a "Lab Channel". The Show Channel consists of 3 jaw-dropping chemistry and physics demonstration shows mixed in with interesting talks about rockets, space, fossils, geysers and renewable energy, all presented by real scientists and engineers from around the country. You'll also meet sharks, prairie dogs, naked mole rats and other zoo animals, and even test your dog's sense of smell and learn how to design and build your own mini museum.
While the Show Channel is mostly about watching, the more interactive Lab Channel gives kids a chance to engineer and experiment themselves (with some adult help), led by a team of skilled STEM instructors representing more than a dozen local educational organizations. Whether you're building a rocket, learning how to prevent injuries while playing your favorite sport, trying you hand at some mathematical magic tricks, growing plants without soil or just making slime, we promise you will have a lot of fun and learn some cool science at the same time- and that's only half of the activities in our lineup!
The Show Channel and Lab Channel schedules are shown below. Anyone can watch the Show Channel on the CS Cool Science Festival Facebook page (see schedule below), but be sure to pre-register if you want participate in one of our Lab programs.
New - The Mobile Earth & Space Observatory (MESO) will also be live-streaming virtual programs on their Facebook page during their "On-site and Online Star Party" special event taking place at the Garden of the Gods Visitor Center from noon to 8 pm (so plan to stop by or watch after our programming is over). The full schedule is on the MESO Facebook page.

Note: all of these Show Channel presentations streamed live on our Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival Facebook page, but you can still watch any of the recordings on our Cool Science Festival YouTube channel.
9:00 am MICRO - Learn to Build Your Own Museum at Home!
- MICRO works with designers, scientists, and storytellers to create and place amazing six-foot-tall museums (including the Smallest Mollusk Museum and the Perpetual Motion Museum) in public spaces like airports, community centers, and hospital waiting rooms- and now they're showing you how to make your own mini museum! (all ages)
- Nate Ylitalo, recent UCCS grad and now a space flight controller at NASA's Johnson Space Center, will talk about the spaceships which take humans to and from the International Space Station, like the SpaceX Dragon and the Boeing Starliner; how they work, how they get into orbit and what it's like inside them. (all ages)
- 3 of our amazing chemistry magicians- including Cool Science co-founder Dr. Ron- will team up for your favorite show full of explosions, mystifying color changes and more- we don't want to spoil the surprises so you'll need to watch! (all ages)
- Meet a live bamboo shark, then learn about these unique fish- their wide diversity of adaptions to live in the ocean and how they are a keystone species that needs our protection. (all ages)
- Paleontologists Ian Miller and Tyler Lyson show some of the ground-breaking discoveries they recently made at Corral Bluffs, an open space area just east of Colorado Springs, that may finally solve the mystery of what happened to the dinosaurs after an asteroid struck and why mammals rose to dominate the Earth. (all ages)
- Meet three of our favorite animal ambassadors and find out what's happening at the zoo and how all our animals are doing during this challenging time. (all ages)
- Find out about the science behind the two most common forms of renewable energy- wind and solar- as well as some other exciting ones with which you may not be as familiar from Jim Riggins of SECRES. (all ages)
- Physicist Jerry Zimmerman (aka "Mr. Freeze" of Fermilab) will show some very, very cool demonstrations with liquid nitrogen- and mix in some cool science jokes as well! (all ages)
- Take a virtual tour of our naked mole rat, black-tailed prairie dog and beehive exhibits and learn why these animals are "exceptions to the rule" species. We'll even challenge you to think of more. (all ages) *Extra- fun activity page (5.6MB PDF).
- HSPPR education manager Tom Schermerhorn will demonstrate just how amazing a dog's nose and sense of smell really is and learn some some cool experiments you can try at home with your own best friend. (all ages)
- 3 of our amazing chemistry magicians- including Cool Science co-founder Dr. Ron- will team up for your favorite show full of explosions, mystifying color changes and more- we don't want to spoil the surprises so you'll need to watch! (all ages)
