Our Day of Science makes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) the focus of a fun day for a single class, several classes, a special group or even the entire school, creating a level of excitement and energy as well as a sense that science is easily understandable and applies in each student's daily life. A real scientist, engineer or educator will present a live, engaging and interactive science demonstration show for a group of students (typically a single class or grade level), after which they will return to their classroom and the next group comes in. Grouping together the classes of a single grade allows us to vary the scientific content and complexity of our scientific explanations based on the student's age.
We offer a wide variety of demonstrations, exploring topics ranging from chemical reactions and phase changes to air pressure and gyroscopic stability. See our Science Demonstrations page for a full list. You can also request a general topic such as physics or chemistry or demonstrations tailored to you current classroom curriculum. We are happy to develop new programs to fit these requests whenever possible. We will need access to your gym, cafeteria, or other large space for the duration of the day. If it is nice outside, we might even do an activity outdoors! We’ll also probably need a table or two and access to electricity and/or water.
In addition to the interactive demonstration shows, a Day of Science can be customized to take many other formats. We often add one or more closely related hands-on labs, workshops or directed activity sessions, typically a single classroom at a time for all classes of one grade level. For example, we can present a Day of Science consisting of all hands-on labs and even after-school activities- we're very flexible and always happy to modify this program to best suit your school's needs.
Hands-on programming can be very volunteer intensive, however, and while we try to bring additional Cool Science volunteers and students from CC and UCCS whenever possible, we primarily rely on involving parents/teachers from your school as volunteers for the day. We also love to work with local companies (and their employees) interested in sponsoring a Day of Science for a local school (see contact info at the bottom of the page). A background in science or engineering may be helpful, but it's never necessary. We'll train all volunteers with everything they need to know and guarantee they'll have just as much fun as the students, while gaining some valuable experience as well.
To help us cover our operating expenses, we request a $1,000 fee/donation for a Day of Science, but limited financial aid is available if your school or PTA cannot afford this fee, so don't hesitate to contact us for more information or to schedule a Day of Science if you're interested. We need at least 2 weeks advance notice to provide one of these programs for your school, and our schedule fills up fast.
The Super Day of Science
This is truly a Day of Science on steroids! We'll use your gym, cafeteria, and 3 or more other large spaces (or classrooms) for 5-7 different presentations. You'll get a sampling of several of our various programs in one day, which may include interactive demonstration shows, lab or workshop sessions, hands-on activities, guest presenters, engineering design projects or experiments, and other special activities. Students, typically grouped by grade levels, rotate through the various presentations (about an hour each) for the entire day. We can sometimes involve special guest presenters such as the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Colorado Springs Utilities, MESO (Mobile Earth & Space Observatory) or science students from local colleges, and we are always looking for other science-focused groups who would like to participate, as well as local companies (and their employees) interested in sponsoring a Day of Science for a local school (see below).
Each September we offer one very special Super Day of Science where we work with the senior physics majors from Colorado College to present 5-6 different physics presentations. Our window of opportunity for this event is very short, so be sure to get on our list if you would like a chance to bring this unique program to your school.
