Let the Fruitcakes Fly!
For the 6th edition of our Kid's Mini Fruitcake Toss we're bringing it back to to where it all began in 2014 and partnering with Manitou Spring's Great Fruitcake Toss in an effort to rid the world of leftover Christmas fruitcakes. We'll be doing it with little wooden catapults- decorated, of course!
It all kicks off with a mini catapult building and decorating workshop at the Manitou Art Center's MACshop Maker Space (515 Manitou Ave., inside Venue 515) at 10 am on Saturday, January 26th. Kids may drop-in anytime between 10 am to noon to assemble their own FREE solid wood mini catapult, we'll provide all the parts and materials to customize it any way they like. Once they're finished they can take their catapult across the street to Memorial Hall (inside Manitou's City Hall building) to practice flinging, then compete in distance and accuracy contests between 10:30 am to 12:30 pm using our official tiny fruitcakes and marshmallows (we'll provide those too!). We'll even have a Best Decorated Catapult contest. We'll record the results as they come in on our leader board and wrap up the competitions by about 12:30 pm to announce all the winners. After our event be sure to stay for all the Great Fruitcake Toss festivities (1-3 pm), including lots of family-friendly games and contests. It will be a full day of fruitcake flinging fun! Please help us keep this event free for all kids by making a suggested donation of $2/child or $5/family, either at the event (cash only) or online at Colorado Gives (just click the "Donate Now" button below to open a new browser to the secure Colorado Gives website where you can donate any amount using your credit card). Your generous donations help support this and all our Cool Science programs year-round. |

NEW - Mini Trebuchet Workshop for 6th-8th Grades!
For the first time this year we are offering a trebuchet engineering workshop just for middle schoolers. The first 8 kids (must be in grades 6, 7 or 8) to sign up will have the opportunity to build - and keep - a FREE solid wood trebuchet (over 3 feet tall!) from pre-cut parts. Our Cool Science volunteers will help with the assembly and show you how it works, then you'll have plenty of time to practice. You can even show off your skills later in the afternoon during an exhibition firing as part of the Great Fruitcake Toss.
Kids can also bring their own home-built mini trebuchet or catapult. Hurry and sign up below, we only have enough parts for 8 trebuchets {if you're not one of the lucky 8 you can still come and play with one of our pre-made trebuchets). |
