Solutions to Spacecraft Momentum Management
Maj. Melissa Dunkel, Schriever SFB
Summary: The unique environment of space creates many challenges for the design and operation of satellites. One of those obstacles is the requirement to manage the attitude of a satellite over the course of its lifetime to correct for disturbances from the environment – a requirement that usually costs the satellite fuel and opportunities to perform its primary mission. Using real world examples, we will talk through the methods engineers have discovered to maximize lifetime and mission performance through creative use of available resources on-orbit.
Major Melissa “SLAM” Dunkel is a Flight Commander in 3d Space Operations Squadron. A 2015 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and 2017 graduate of Air Force Institute of Technology, she holds a Bachelor and Master of Science in Astronautical Engineering. When Maj Dunkel is not nerding out about satellites with her husband and two daughters, she can be found running a new hiking trail or reading a book.
