Colorado Springs, CO - Cool Science has received a $15,000 grant from Battelle to provide its hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs for elementary and middle school students. Cool Science will use the money to reach students in Harrison School District 2, as well as other rural and underserved schools, libraries and Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the Pikes Peak Region and Southern Colorado. “As a nonprofit, Battelle reinvests every year in the communities where our employees live and work,” said Wesley Hall, senior vice president of philanthropy and education at Battelle. “Our grants help close gaps in STEM programming to reach underserved students. Because the next generation of STEM talent will be tasked with solving the world’s most pressing issues, we’re committed to fostering young learners and preparing them to be the leaders of tomorrow.” Cool Science’s most popular program, the Day of Science, makes STEM the focus of a fun day for students, creating a level of excitement and energy — and a sense that science is easily understandable and applies in each student's daily life. A Day of Science can consist of interactive demonstration shows, hands-on labs and activities, or combinations of the two. Each program is customized to the audience, grade level, and the needs of the schoolteachers and curriculum. “A grant this size is a tremendous help for Cool Science,” said Marc Straub, executive director of the program. “We’ll be able to expand our reach to more students and assist in developing interest and engagement in the sciences. We are grateful for the support and look forward to working with Battelle.” This grant from Battelle will provide at least 15 Days of Science in the target schools, libraries, and clubs.
